Before you drive
Contactless rental car pickup: recording damage when no staff are there
Contactless pickup lets you skip the rental counter, but who do you tell if you find a scratch? Whether you collect the keys from a locker or unlock the car through an app, check its condition before driving away. Take your own photos and use the rental company's reporting process for any damage missing from its records.

The quick check
Confirm the car, save the initial condition report, photograph missing marks and report them through the company's stated channel before leaving. Keep both the notification and any acknowledgement.
Check what contactless means for your booking
Counter bypass, key lockers and app-based access can have different requirements. Alamo's published Skip the Counter process, for example, includes advance steps and a check by the exit-gate agent at participating locations. A fast collection does not always mean that nobody will verify your documents or agreement.
Before travelling, save the pickup instructions, branch contact details and the method for reporting a condition issue. Check that your phone can open the booking, and give yourself enough battery for access and photos. Keep any key codes private. If the instructions mention a reporting window, do not assume a message sent much later will be treated the same as one sent at collection.
Match the registration before accepting the handover
Compare the registration and vehicle details with the booking or assignment. Where you choose a car from a row, check that it belongs to the permitted category and complete the company's selection process. Record the car you drive away, rather than relying on a booking confirmation that describes only a category.
Open and save the initial condition report. It may be a diagram, an email attachment or a screen inside the rental app. Check whether it belongs to the assigned vehicle and which marks it already records. Keep a copy you can find later if the app screen changes after departure.
In PickupLens, check the registration and vehicle details before starting your collection scan. You can correct them if the number plate has been read incorrectly or the lookup returns the wrong details.
Take a deliberate walkaround before driving away
Start with wider views of the front, rear and both sides. Check the wheels, bumpers, mirrors and glass, then capture anything you notice more closely. For each mark, keep enough surrounding bodywork in one image to establish where it is. Review the saved detail view for blur or glare while you can still take another.
A row of parked cars can hide the lower doors or rear corners. Record what you cannot see clearly, and use the company's contact channel if you need a better inspection position or help with a concern. Do not start driving a vehicle with a safety concern simply to complete a photo sequence elsewhere.
PickupLens helps you keep track of the areas you have photographed and links the marks in your report to their original photos. Check any AI suggestions yourself, and add damage you noticed even if the app has not suggested it.
Report missing marks through the stated channel
Use the branch's damage-reporting route, whether that is an app, a staffed exit, email or another specified channel. SIXT UK's guidance asks customers to contact it promptly about damage missing from the rental contract. Check your own company's instructions instead of assuming the same process applies everywhere.
A useful message is: ‘Collecting booking [reference], registration [registration], at [branch]. Before departure I noticed [mark and location], which is missing from the condition report. Photos attached show the area and detail. Please add it to the collection record and confirm.’ Keep the sent message and any updated report.
Saving a report in PickupLens does not automatically notify your rental company. Send the relevant evidence through its required channel and retain the response alongside your own record. If you only speak to someone, note the conversation and ask for written confirmation where practical.
Leave with the record you will need later
Before joining traffic, check that your photos are clear and that you have completed the company's collection steps. An upload that has started is not yet a backup, especially if the signal drops in an underground car park. Keep your local originals until uploading is complete.
When the trip ends, use the optional return scan included with your paid PickupLens collection scan. You will then have separate records of how you received the car and how you left it, even if no staff were present at either handover.
