Picking up a rental car at night: how to check and photograph damage

By PickupLens ·

Your flight is late, the rental car park is dim and every overhead lamp reflects off the dark paint. Checking the car at night takes more care, but you can still spot existing damage and take useful photos. Find the best safe lighting available and check each saved image before moving on.

The quick check

Use the best safe lighting available, photograph each area steadily and record any inspection limits. Report concerns promptly and check your own rental company's rules for a follow-up inspection in daylight.

Ask for enough light to inspect the car

Look for a well-lit, safe place to stand around the assigned vehicle. Ask staff whether they can help with lighting or move the car to an appropriate inspection area. Do not step into a live traffic lane or move the car without first following the collection instructions.

Take a wider view showing the car and the lighting conditions where you received it. This gives context to the darker close-ups. Record the registration while it is clear and keep the collection paperwork available so you can compare any marks as you go.

Pause for each photo and inspect the result

Wipe the camera lens and stop moving before capturing a view. Low light can make a small movement blur the detail, even when the preview seems bright. Keep the phone steady until the capture finishes, then open the saved image and look at the area that matters.

A bright image is not necessarily a clear one. Check whether a scratch is visible, whether the wheel edge is sharp and whether reflections hide the panel. Retake a blurred or unclear photo while you are still beside the car; turning up the brightness later will not restore missing detail.

Use an extra angle when a light hides the surface

Overhead lamps can create bright lines across paint and glass. Shift your position slightly and see whether the reflection moves. For any mark you find, take a wider photo showing its position on the car and a close-up from the clearest angle.

A torch or phone flash may help in some positions and produce glare in others. Try the light from an angle where practical, and check the resulting photo. Keep useful alternative views rather than assuming the brightest one is the best. Never add a light or object in a way that could scratch the vehicle.

  • Bumper corners and lower bodywork that fall below the main lighting.
  • Each wheel face and visible tyre sidewall.
  • Mirrors, glass and lights from an angle that avoids glare.
  • Interior condition, dashboard warnings and fuel or battery level.

Be specific about anything you cannot inspect

If an area is too dark to inspect, make a factual note such as ‘left lower sill obscured by shadow at collection’. Photograph the wider area and tell the rental company through its stated channel. Do not label a surface undamaged simply because you cannot see it clearly.

Ask the company how it handles a daylight follow-up and keep the answer. Europcar's UK damage policy describes a 24-hour reporting process for certain collection situations, including pickup outside daylight hours. That is a company-specific provision: other countries, companies and agreements may set different requirements, so do not assume you can always wait until the next morning.

Let the app organise the record while you check the car

PickupLens helps you work through the collection inspection and keeps your original photos available. Review them and add another angle where needed. Darkness and glare can conceal marks from the app as well as from you, so the absence of an AI suggestion does not mean the car is damage-free.

Before leaving, save any updated company condition report and check whether your photos have finished uploading. Keep the local originals until they are backed up. If you take more photos in daylight, retain both sets and make clear when each was taken. A clearer photo may help explain a mark, but it is still a later view of the car.
